Learning From the Wizard

Part of the wizard's mission is to provide you with the ability to learn the background of some of the technology involved in your vision system. If you hover your mouse cursor over a phrase and a green symbol appears info icon, clicking on it will assist in answering the questions or add to your background knowledge of the subject.

Using the Wizard

Units:
Choose your "units of measure" (generally optics deal in metric).

Sensor Format:
If you have a standard camera, use the "select" button, if not, fill in the line scan length or the vertical and horizontal dimensions of your sensor.

Object size:
Add your object size. The Wizard will adjust the relative camera / object orientation to maximize your field of view. For circular objects, enter the diameter in both the height and width fields.

Pixel size: (optional)
Some of the high mag, high speed systems are capable of displaying very fine detail. If this applies to your proposed setup, click on the "advanced" box under the mag display graphic, and add your pixel size where requested. (you may skip this step as desired).

Working Distance: Fill in your desired working distance. Except in isolated instances, the wizard will not use this as criteria, but will display the results for various systems.

Camera mount:
Select your particular camera configuration. Most common are the C-mount and F-mount. Some of the smaller cameras use the CS-mount which may be converted for use with a C-mount lens by adding a 5mm spacer. However, there is no way to use a CS-lens on a C-mount camera, as the flange distance is too short to reach the sensor.

Additional features:
It is important to initially specify any features critical to your application. The Wizard knows which features are applicable to each product line and will not look at a line that does not fit your feature requirement.

If no features are checked, the wizard will give you all equipment that meets the magnification (field of view) requirements. Two special cases are telecentricity and fluorescence. Here, the wizard will not offer these product lines unless the features are requested.

To see which features are available for each product line, fill in your basic lens requirements, then check / un-check features and watch the "product families" change availability.

Moving forward:
At the bottom of the front page are six lens product families. Depending on what you have told the Wizard, some of the groups will be "grayed out" (aka not an option). If they are all out, then you have asked for an impossible combination. Check your "sensor diagonal", "mag range", "camera mount", or "additional features" for compatibility with those listed for each lens family. Where available, clicking on a "why not" will indicate specific compatibility issues.

If comparing values does not yield an answer, try turning off the Additional Features, one at a time, to see if a lens family comes back on. If so, hover over the feature and click on the green help icon to discover where your input is causing the problem.

Assuming you have a live lens family that looks suitable, "select" one and the next page will show you a pair of options. You may select either one and continue, or "test drive" either one to see what happens as you vary your setup.

Note: Some initial family selections require further sub-selections prior to reaching the final choices.

Some systems may be more complex (motorization, special lighting, etc), but the Wizard will step you thru the building process a page at a time. It will also offer continuous access to the "help" section for your edification.

Summary Page:
At the end of this process will be a final product page based on your travels. It will again list your inputs. It will also list the results of the equipment selection customization. At the bottom will be the actual operating parameters. This page may be printed for your records or you can email the solution to yourself or a colleague.

Starting over:
If you click on the Optical Wizard logo at the top of the page, you will be returned to the beginning, where you may change your inputs or keep the same inputs and select a different product line to customize. You may also return to previous steps by clicking the tabs on the top of the page, or, click Return to Optical Wizard to be returned to the beginning.
